What is the Summer School of civil law ?

The Summer School currently is one of the key initiatives of the Foundation in order to promote the characteristics and assets of Civil law.

This event is a yearly meeting for Civil law and legal culture, bringing together students and legal practitioners from all around the world in Paris during the first three weeks of July.

In 2017, 50 different nations were represented by more than 150 students.

Building on its success, the Summer School will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2018.

Its wealth lies in its organization, the quality of the education it provides and the diversity of legal cultures represented. Thanks to this training session, participants can not only acquire fundamental knowledge on Romano-Germanic law, but also debate on the assets and specificities of law systems based on their different points of view and experiences.

The courses are available in three different languages: English, French and Spanish. Such organization facilitates the teaching and the learning by erasing the language barrier.

The program offers ten different courses of ten hours each, all taught within the premises of the University Panthéon-Assas (Paris II), by eminent law professors and practitioners, with different fields of expertise and backgrounds. The students have to choose one mandatory course and three additional subjects such as constitutional law, contracts, liability, intellectual property, public contracts or arbitration.

In order to deepen and sharpen the student’s knowledge, the Civili Law Initiative organizes meetings with its partners and paramount French legal actors, including lawyers, bailiffs and notaries.

Finally, the training is complemented by a cultural program of visits of the highest French legal institutions, including the Constitutional Council, the Conseil d’Etat, the Cour de Cassation, the National Assembly and Senate.

Pursuant to an optional final examination, participants will be awarded a certificate of training in Civil Law by the University Panthéon-Assas (Paris II).

Our ambition is to offer all students enrolled a coherent body of courses to convey knowledge on continental law, as well as its evolution and its influence on the legal and economic structures, currently under construction in the world. The Foundation is particularly attached to the international dimension of this event, which makes it a marketplace and crossroad for ideas, legal cultures and knowledge that creates privileged moments of gathering and debate. Those moments are extended abroad through the action of the Association of Friends for Civil Law (A2DC), bringing together participants of previous Summer School sessions.

Registration fees, receiving financial support from the Civil Law Initiative, include training courses, conferences, visits and cocktails. For 2018, it was established at:

  • 500 € without accommodation;
  • 1 500 € with accommodation for the three weeks at the « Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris » (75014 – Paris)

Scholarships may, exceptionally, be granted upon specific and justified request.

« In July 2017 I had the opportunity to participate in the summer school dedicated to continental law. One of the greatest advantages that I got was meeting so many remarkable people from all around the world. Professors were one of the bests in their fields and it was a unique opportunity to discover such details only those professionals could know thanks to their years of experience. Furthermore, the curriculum included several guided cultural visits to the highest jurisdictions of France as well as legislative bodies which enable to understand the French legal system right from the inside.

All in all, this summer school is a unique opportunity to develop yourself both professionally and as a person, just because living one month in Paris surrounded by lawyers from all around the world enables you to learn a lot about their jurisdictions and to share your knowledge while representing your country as well.»
